Coccydynia, commonly called tailbone pain or coccyx pain, is a persistent localized pain at the very bottom of the spine.  This condition is usually caused from giving birth, prolonged sitting on hard surfaces, or local trauma such as a fall.  Symptoms may consist of one or all of the following: Pain that is markedly worse when sitting, local pain in the tailbone area that is worse when touched or when any pressure is placed on it, pain that is worse when moving from a sitting to standing position, or pain that is worse with constipation and feels better after a bowel movement.

If you seek medical attention your doctor may tell you to modify your activities that cause pressure to the tailbone and in rare cases they may suggest surgery.  Coccyx pain can be extremely painful and the last thing you want to hear is to modify your activities!  You want that pain to go away NOW and you don’t want surgery!  So what do you do?  It’s simple; you should seek non-invasive treatment through chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health.  Chiropractic care is used most often to treat complaints including, but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, headaches and in this case it can be extremely effective with coccyx pain.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as a “chiropractic adjustment.”  The purpose of an adjustment is to restore joint mobility by applying a controlled force into joints that have become misaligned or stuck in their movement.  An adjustment of the affected joint restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.  Your first line of non-invasive treatment is to visit your chiropractor so your coccyx pain can be relieved using a very gentle and comfortable technique.  In most cases it may take only a few visits to see amazing progress.  If you are considering an “internal” coccyx treatment FIRST consider seeing Doctors Julia Mason and Janet McCaffrey for an “external” gentle adjustment.  They have had tremendous success restoring normal function to the coccyx and surrounding tissues and getting rid of your pain.
